A PhD Student from WUT on Archaeological Missions
MSc Eng. Paweł Czernic is a PhD student at the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography.
He took part in his first archaeological mission while still pursuing his engineering studies, in Berenike - an ancient port city on the coast of the Red Sea in southern Egypt.
He also participated twice in the Omani-Polish Archaeological Mission in the Qumayrah Valley, located in the breathtaking mountains of Oman.
Three times, he was a member of the Kuwaiti-Polish Archaeological Mission at the desert sites of Bahra-1 and Kharaib el-Desht on an island in the Persian Gulf.
Among his most recent expeditions, Paweł can proudly mention his two participations in the Polish Archaeological Mission in Ptolemais, situated on the coast of Libya.
During all of these missions, Paweł supported archaeologists with a broad range of geomatics expertise - from creating photogrammetric 3D models of excavation sites and artifacts, through classical geodetic surveying, GIS support, and satellite measurements. At the Bahra-1 site in Kuwait, he also conducted geophysical surveys using ground-penetrating radar.
Based on 3D models of artifacts and with the support of PW Maker Space, faithful replicas of selected artifacts were later produced using 3D printing technologies after returning from the missions. These replicas enabled archaeologists to continue their analyses without removing the original artifacts from their countries of origin.
After reading all this, most of you would probably assume that Paweł’s PhD research is related to archaeology. However, nothing could be further from the truth - in his doctoral studies, he decided to focus on the spatial exploration of Mars in collaboration with NASA, but perhaps he will tell us more about that another time...
